Getting them Hooked at a Young Age
In our May 2019 newsletter, we talked a little about the importance of setting the right foundation for our students. We mentioned the importance of our Reading and Writing Intervention classes in the lives of kids like Mateo. For us, the Reading and Writing Intervention class is the most important factor in our program.
Our motto is Go to School, Stay in School, Dream Big. How do we ensure that this motto is a reality instead of a catchy slogan? How do we get kids to actually go to school and stay there until they graduate high school and move on to university? We believe the key is to get children hooked on education from a young age. If we do not set the right foundation, the building will not be able to weather the storms of life and will eventually fall.
“Building a solid foundation in the early years of a child’s life will not only help him or her reach their full potential but will also result in better societies as a whole.”
That’s where our Reading/Writing Intervention class comes in. This class focuses on children from 1st through 6th grade to help them catch up with their peers by working with them on an individual basis on the problems they are struggling with. But our goal and objective is bigger than that. As mentioned above, we want to get these students hooked on education for life.
Mrs. Maricarmen understands the importance of getting to these kids at a young age and has done a fantastic job of not only catching them up on the subjects they struggle with but, most importantly, getting them to fall in love with education. Once they are hooked on education, we then keep them going in the right direction and these students tend to remain in our program until they graduate high school and move on to university or technical school. In other words, once we hook them, they begin to see the possibilities available to them – they begin to Dream Big.
