Meet our Students Mizraim
Mizraim Tierrafria Vasquez is a handful. He is in 4th grade and is literally a ball of lighted matches mixed with gunpowder. He loves to play and run and jump and do all the daredevil stunts no other kid will try. Every chance he gets he goes to our storage to get a unicycle we have and rides around the school, waving at everyone, showing off his skills. He is very witty and is always coming up with jokes to make everyone laugh. He is the typical “class clown.”
Because of his intense attitude, a lot of teachers in his elementary school have gotten frustrated with him and kicked him out of classes numerous times. He recently was transferred to another school, miles from his home, because of “behavioral” problems.
“If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could be better changed in ourselves.”
C.G. Jung, Integration of the Personality
Mizraim comes to our program every day after school. We have had problems with him as well, but we honestly consider him a loveable troublemaker. He doesn’t do things with bad intentions in his heart. He is just so hyper and does things without thinking at times. He is actually a very good kid. He is helpful and willing to serve whenever something is needed. And he loves to make people laugh.
Of course, there are times when we have disciplined him and reprimanded him for things he has done. But he continues coming here because he knows we care for him and are doing everything we can to guide him in the right direction.
A lot of times, kids like Mizraim just need someone to believe in them and see the good in them. Most of them come from home environments we can’t even imagine. If they are constantly being told they are bad, they start believing it and living up to those perceptions. Here at Volcanes we are trying to be more than teachers of English and computers and music. We are striving to be teachers of human beings. Mizraim, and any kids like him, will always have a safe refuge in our program. Here we will help them to believe in and see the good in themselves. It is the only way they will learn to Dream Big.
